POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA) is seeking a Climate Justice Advocate on a temporary basis who will support the implementation of community-based research, outreach, and education initiatives advancing advocacy efforts in the intersection of Immigration Justice and Climate Justice. The crises faced by working-class and immigrant communities is multifaceted, this role contributes to CHIRLA’s strategy to integrate climate adaptation, housing justice, and immigrant inclusion. The Advocate will play a key role in engaging in climate impacted individuals, generating community-informed data, and supporting policy development efforts.

Salary & Benefits: $70,304
FLSA Classification: Exempt, full-time temporary, regular
Classification: CHIRLA recognizes a staff bargaining unit affiliated with AFSCME Local 4501. This position is not included in CHIRLA’s bargaining unit and covered under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.
REPORTS TO: Director of Climate Justice
LOCATION: Headquarters, Los Angeles

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Community-Based Research & Data Analysis
- Utilize Salesforce, Google Forms, or Microsoft Forms to create bilingual community surveys that gather both quantitative and qualitative data. Once the survey is prepared, conduct field outreach at events, community spaces, or through door-to-door efforts.
- Coordinate a team of volunteers and community members to collect survey responses. After gathering the data, process the survey results. Analyze the survey and focus group data and produce summary memos.
- Translate the findings into actionable insights that are relevant to policy development.
- Engage with residents across Los Angeles County affected by climate change.
- Assist in recruiting participants for workshops and focus groups.
- Foster relationships to increase participation in advocacy efforts.
- Facilitate the recruitment of participants for climate justice educational workshops.
- Facilitate educational workshops and focus groups.
- Develop accessible educational materials.
- Assist in planning and executing scenario planning sessions at climate-focused events (e.g., LA Climate Week).
- Support coalition meetings and coordination with partner organizations.
- Create social media toolkits and outreach materials.
- Develop presentations, flyers, and infographics for community education. Draft policy summaries and briefing materials.
- Produce short educational content such as explainer videos and infographics.
Required:
- At least bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent related experience.
- Demonstrated commitment to climate justice, housing justice, and/or immigrant rights.
- Spanish fluency or high proficiency is required as the job requires communications with parents in the Spanish language.
- Flexibility is required based on the needs of the organization. The position will involve some evening and weekend work.
- Computer literacy: word processing, internet navigation, and other work-related applications.
- Travel within Los Angeles County Required.
- Excellent research and policy development skills.
- Able to create and maintain good working relationships with staff, community partner organizations and community meetings.
